Musings and Contemplations

Let’s Be Mermaids

Just this past week I returned from a wonderful trip to Mexico Beach!  It's down in Florida near the Gulf. If you've never been I suggest you make a visit down there as soon as possible. First off it has the cutest little town. It's not like other beach towns. I mean yes it is filled with condos and houses and salt fills the air, but it is unique. They have their own collection of fun restaurants and their very own corner shops. There are bakeries, ice cream, and some of the best pizza I have ever had. If you enjoy exploring little towns by the water I would check this place out.

However, though I love the scenery, the best part of Mexico Beach, is obviously the beach. The sand is soft and packed, unlike other beaches I've been to which can be very rocky or littered with trash. We stay on what the locals call the "Wild side", which is less populated then further down the beach. But still no matter where you are in Mexico Beach it's never going to be as crowded as more popular beaches. The water is always a great temperament, and to our surprise this year, the water actually had waves. Normally, Mexico Beach is  very calm, sometimes it's even like sitting in bath water, but this year we had some pretty good waves.

This trip was filled with sun, surf, and tequila. As well as catching up with my friend and her family. But one of the most memorable things about this trip was when my friend and I decided to swim in the ocean with goggles. Now I haven't worn goggles in years. I used to just open my eyes in the water at the pool, and I never even really thought about wearing them in the ocean. But once I entered the water with those goggles, and dove in, I realized I had been missing out. Though there was not a lot of fish that we could see I was in awe of the vast world under my feet.

Then I would flip over and watch the waves crash over me. Everything faded as white bubbles filled the sky above me. Peaceful is not the word. It was more then that. I was separated from everything for just a moment and as the foam disappeared, the blue sky shown above me. As I came up to breath the fresh air I felt so free from all anxiety.

The rest of the trip was filled with poker, drinks, movies, and a late night conversation with my best friend, which was needed. The best part was just getting away from everything and letting the "foam" of my vacation wash over me. Sometimes we just need to leave. We just need a break. And you are not weak or lame for taking that rest. You are not running away from your responsibilities, you are trying to find a way to handle them. Anxiety is no joke, so take the time you need. Vent to your friend and then eat a whole lot of ice cream. Find your way to cope. Because the only way through life is finding ways to enjoy something during sad times. And for me, sometimes I just need to be a mermaid.
