Musings and Contemplations

Extraordinary

In several conversations I have overheard in the past couple months, it always feels like people are missing the point. We worry about careers, family and relationship issues, and what we are going to eat for dinner. We stress about projects, about what other people think, and about whether we can somehow find a way to get through the day. We are always passing though.. looking to what is going to happen next. It got me thinking about how much obsessing about our future can destroy our present.

Now, don’t misunderstand me, it is good to look ahead. I am one of the biggest planners you will ever meet. However, if we are always looking ahead, how many great little moments have we missed? How many moments with friends have you wasted because you were too busy complaining about all you don’t have? How many new places have you missed out on seeing because your too busy planning what you are going to look at next? How many wonderful conversations have you ignored because you are scrolling through your phone, being envious of  all you “don’t” have? It’s so silly! We see everything we lack but not all the things we possess.

When I take the time to sit and think about my life, I always love to think about all the little moments. Little moments like when you watch a movie with people you like and you joke and talk though the whole thing. When you are standing in the airport awaiting someone you haven’t seen in a long time. Or when you hike up a mountain and reach the top and feel the wind brush across your face.

Big moments in life fly by and the adrenaline dies pretty quickly. The rush you get from these big extravagant things, never really last and you’re always left chasing that feeling. Yet, ordinary things that you do everyday, they are sustainable. That’s a joy you can hold on to. Now, I’m not saying don’t take risk. You should. Go for those risks and take those chances. Just do not forget to slow down and relish in those ordinary moments. Because those are the moments that make up a life. Those simple moments are what make life sustainable. They are what make life worth it in the end.

For example, weddings are great and I adore them, but hearing of a successful marriage, makes me way more excited. One moment is nothing compared to a life time. And well, a lifetime of simple, ordinary moments, is rather incredible. It makes for a rather extraordinary life. What’s funny is… if you take time to pay attention to “simple” things, you realize, they really aren’t simple, they are essential. So take your time and pay attention to all the wonder to behold around you. It will make your everyday life more enjoyable, not to mention those special, “Once in a lifetime” moments, will seem far more extravagant.

Stay Excellent Folks,

Megan
